Memorial softball tourney wraps another year

Three new Percifield champions crowned — With its largest number of entries in 25 years, the 36-team field of the 2010 Percifield Memorial Softball Tournament was quickly whittled down to nine teams leaving with trophies during the weekend.
“We had a record 36 teams enter the tournament in its 25th year of being named the Percifield Memorial Tournament,” tournament director JW Chadez said.
The teams competing were split into three divisions, Upper Division featured nine teams, Middle Division had 15 teams with the Lower Division hosting 11 teams.
The Upper Division champs were the Pirates, players for which included tournament director Chadez. Last year’s Middle Division champion, Dan’s Auto Body out of Emmett, slugged it out against the Pirates in the championship round, coming in second. Panzeri Livestock rounded out the championship bracket with third place in the Upper Division.
The two MVPs of the Upper Division were, Danielle Vanderwiel and Russell Buffington.
In the Middle Division, Wicked were named the champions beating the Pour House. Team Take it Easy finished third in the Middle Division.
The MVPs for the Middle Division were, Debbie Percifield and Paul Guray.
Beer Pressure claimed the Lower Division championship. Team “E” came in second followed by Woody’s Flamingos.
MVPs for the Lower division included Andi Longoria and Jeff Hepworth.
The Percifield tourney also hosted a home run derby for anyone competing to enter. The men’s champion slugger was Zach McBride with four out of five in the final round. The women’s champ was Kaylea Kurdy who cleared two of three in the final round.
The sportsmanship award was given to the Brew Crew, with the community supporter award going to Chris Salove of Marsing Hardware & Pump.
All proceeds from the annual tournament benefit the Marsing City Recreation program.
“We are lucky to have a great community that is supportive of the tournament and Marsing Youth Sports,” Chadez said. “We are thankful to all of those who spend one week in July helping set up, run, and take down the tournament.”
Read this week's edition of The Owyhee Avalanche for a full list of award winners.
